Recent advancements in X-ray imaging technology means that lightweight, wide field-of-view and high-resolution instruments are being deployed on Earth- and planetary-based spacecraft missions. They aim to revolutionise our understanding of different environments around the solar system. This year, UK-supported missions will employ X-ray imaging technology including the soft X-ray imager (SXI) onboard the ESA/CAS SMILE (Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer) mission and the MIXS instrument on the ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission to Mercury. Future outer planetary missions such as the Uranus Orbiter and Probe (UOP) or the ESA L4 Enceladus mission are named as high priorities on NASA’s 2023 decadal survey. Other proposed missions including COMPASS and Tianwen-4, both to Jupiter, plan to include X-ray imagers (XIs). Now is the time to explore X-ray imaging possibilities for these missions through modelling. This RAS Specialist Discussion Meeting will highlight contemporary research on planetary X-rays in the context of current and future missions.
